The neighborhood of Trastevere celebrates Rome’s biggest Marian procession in honor of an ancient statue of Our Lady that was found by fishermen in the Tiber River in 1535. Actually there are two processions. The first takes place on the Saturday after the July 16th feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel through the streets of Trastevere. The statue then is displayed in the Church of Saint Agatha until the following Sunday, when a second procession, this time on the Tiber River takes place. It is quite a week of events for the statue.
