Mysterious and Magnificent Matera – One of Southern Italy’s Hidden Gems

I give you a sneak peek at one of Southern Italy’s most hidden gems – Mysterious and Magnificent Matera. Located in the region of Basilicata and and the Province of Matera, this one of the most beautiful hilltop rocky towns. It is well known for the filming of a number of religious movies including Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of The Christ.” In 2019 Matera was awarded the ‘European City of Culture’. An honor bestowed on this atmospheric, unique and authentic patchwork of caves on the cliffs and valleys, polished stone pathways and haphazard staircases, that has existed for centuries. As a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, the town of Matera dates back over 7000 years.
